WHAT’S BREWING IN THE
WORLD?
The recent financial and economic crisis that brought the US closed to
bankruptcy have become the last nail to the decline of the US and West.
The world is now turned to the G-20 nations to act in a consortium by
creating a new global financial architecture as an integrated solution to
the crisis. At the third G-20 Summit in Pittsburgh late November, the G-20
has proclaimed itself as the new Forum for International Economic
Cooperation replacing the G8 after the end of US domination in the late
20th century.
Meanwhile, among the G-20 member countries, the only three countries
experiencing growth in the midst of the crisis are China (8.6%), India
(7.5%) and Indonesia (4.5%). China’s growth in particular has been very
robust; and if China could sustain such growth at a minimum of 8%
annually, it is not impossible that the global power would shift,
according to Martin Jacques, to China alone.
Indonesia as part of the new Troika of CHINDONESIA (China, India and
Indonesia) as well as the anchor of ASEAN needs to prepare itself with
assertiveness and renew its corporate competitiveness in the wake of the
implementation of ASEAN - China Free Trade Agreement .
THE BUZZ
Martin Jacques
in his book argues that China’s ascendance as an economic superpower will
alter the cultural, political, social, and ethnic balance of global power
in the twenty-first century, unseating the West and in the process,
creating a whole new world. There will be a new type of modernity, a new
Chinese Civilization State. China will overtake the United States as the
world’s largest economy by 2027 and will ascend to the position of world
economic leader by 2050. How will Indonesia as a multi-cultural, pluralist
state with long history of economic turnaround survive, and move forward
successfully? How will Indonesian economic development and corporate
competitiveness face the new regional challenges and opportunities?
THE ISSUES
1. If China
took over the US or Western domination because of its robust economy, how
would this phenomenon
shape up the dynamics of the world?
2. What are the key success factors that bring China to where it is now
and in the future?
3. What should ASEAN and Indonesia look for as China's role becomes
increasingly dominant?
4. How would Indonesian corporate and governance respond to the ASEAN
China Free Trade Agreement?
5. What are the strategies to empower Indonesian corporations in
identifying opportunities of China’s market rather
than being “preoccupied” with the threat of Chinese product inflow?

"Clarifying the Infamous “Breakfast of the Century”

INDONESIA INC. & THE G-20
MOMENTUM
The 2009 global
financial crisis has signaled a change within the geopolitical paradigm
where previous monolythical domination such as Pax Romana, Pax Hispanica,
Pax Nederlandica, Pax Britannica & Pax Americana is diminishing. The world
is now directed towards a Pax Consortis era where the consortium of G-20
countries of which Indonesia is a member, may deliberately control and
direct the world’s economy.
What are the perspectives of the Indonesian presidency (SBY-Boediono) and
their cabinet in using the momentum that comes only once in a century?
Find out the perspectives of German philosopher Robert Schiller in
stressing the importance of policy makers and government officials in
making the best of this historical opportunity.

● ON THE ROAD TO
UN-BALI “CLIMATE CHANGE”
"Creating Global Consensus on a Sustainable Model of Avoided
Deforestation"
Mounting global
concern over climate change and the link to deforestation has drawn
international attention to the need to protect the world's forests. As
countries prepare for discussion and negotiation at the United Nations
Climate Change conference in Bali, there is much interest in "Avoided
Deforestation" - an effort to protect forests and reduce carbon emissions.
Indonesia as the Chair of the Conference on Parties (COP) XIII will host
the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Bali
(December 3 to 13, 2007) and discuss the following challenges:
1. How to achieve a global consensus on Avoided Deforestation among
countries with different economic status?
2. How to practice responsible forestry practices that are defined by a
balance of economic benefit, social
investment, ecological protection and emission reduction?
3. What kind of investment in the form of green technology is needed? Will
the US be the main investor?
4. What kind of model can be implemented to encourage optimal solutions
that prioritize rapid development but
without ecological and social compromise?
